Every Penny Counts… Especially When You Have to Pick Them Up!

We’ve been doing a pretty good job of downsizing our lives in preparation for full-time RV living. It’s a lot….but we are steadily getting rid of things.

Last week, we tackled the VERY HEAVY coin jar.

After 11 years of tossing our spare change into one of those enormous coin jars, we finally decided it was time for that to go, too.

After all, we’re trying to lighten our load, and I can tell you, 16 years of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters is NOT light!

So, we loaded up two containers of coins and headed to Lexington to turn our little fortune into actual spendable money.

Simple enough, right?

Well, apparently, we can’t even get rid of spare change without turning it into an adventure.

We arrived at our destination, parked the car, and Ed got out to retrieve our precious cargo.

What we didn’t realize was that one of the containers had shifted dangerously close to the back door.

Ed opened the door.

And that’s when our retirement fund made a run for it.

The container came tumbling out, the lid went flying, and approximately half of our 16 years of financial planning scattered across the parking lot!

And not just anywhere in the parking lot.

BETWEEN TWO PARKED CARS.

Spilling hundreds of coins on flat, open pavement would have been entirely too convenient.

There was Ed, wedged between two vehicles, bent over with his backside in the air, trying to collect what looked like the contents of a small casino’s slot machines.

Pennies everywhere. Dimes rolling under tires. Quarters making a break for the next parking space.

And me?

Well, naturally, I did what any loving, supportive wife would do in a moment like this.

I took a picture.

🤣

I’m sure Ed appreciated my assistance.

The best part was that neither one of us could stop laughing. Here we were, trying to simplify our lives, and somehow we’d managed to turn a trip to get rid of spare change into a parking lot scavenger hunt.

Picking up pennies one at a time loses its charm pretty quickly when there are approximately 47,000 of them!

Okay, maybe not 47,000. But from where Ed was standing, I’m sure it felt like it.

Eventually, we gathered up our little treasure, recovered what dignity we had left, and continued with our mission.

I suppose there’s a lesson in all of this.

One thing’s for sure. We’re not even living in the RV full-time yet, and we’re already collecting stories faster than we’re getting rid of stuff.

Another day, another adventure on the road to StarrsAboard! ❤️
