Sometimes You Just Have to Look Up

Life has been busy lately. Really busy.

Between work, getting ready for retirement, downsizing the house, and preparing for our life on the road, it seems like Ed and I are constantly working on something. There’s always another project, another decision, another thing that needs to be crossed off the list.

And sometimes, in the middle of all that busyness, we forget to just enjoy life.

This morning, Ed mentioned that he wanted to do something tonight. Nothing fancy. Just get out of the house and spend a little time together.

So he drove me to work, picked me up afterward, and we went out to dinner at a sweet little restaurant where you build your own pizza.

Nothing extraordinary. Just pizza.

But it was so nice.

We sat there enjoying our dinner, talking, and just enjoying each other’s company. No projects to finish. No boxes to pack. No decisions about what stays and what goes.

Just the two of us.

I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed that.

On the way home, we happened to look up at the sky.

And there it was.

Two beautiful rainbow-colored patches, one on each side of the sun and another little glimmer of one at the top.

Of course, I had no idea what we were looking at. So naturally, I asked ChatGPT. Apparently, they’re called sun dogs, a phenomenon that occurs when sunlight passes through ice crystals high in the atmosphere.

I’d never seen anything quite like it.

And with all the talk about an approaching hurricane, the sky seemed even more remarkable.

But here’s what struck me.

How many beautiful things do we miss because we’re too busy thinking about what we need to do next?

How many sunsets? How many little moments? How many opportunities to sit across from someone we love and simply enjoy being together?

We’re working so hard to prepare for this next chapter of our lives. We talk about all the places we’re going to see, the adventures we’re going to have, and the memories we’re going to make.

But we don’t have to wait until we’re living in the motorhome to start making those memories.

Sometimes the adventure is just a pizza dinner on a Friday night.

And sometimes, if you remember to look up on the way home, there’s a little something extra waiting for you.

Life is happening right now. Not just when we finally get everything crossed off the list.

I think we both needed that reminder.
