Thawing Our Way to Retirement

Apparently I forgot to include the freezer in my downsizing plan.

I divided the house into sections. Thought about closets, cabinets, all the obvious stuff. But food just wasn’t on my radar.

Then last weekend happened.

I didn’t feel like cooking, so I went to the freezer looking for something I could just heat up. I pulled out a pack of white bean chili and happened to look at the date.

November 2nd, 2025.

Then I looked back in and saw there were still six packages sitting there.

Six.

If we haven’t eaten six packages in almost an entire year, how in the world are we going to empty all this food in the next six months?

Because this isn’t just one freezer.

We’ve got the freezer under the fridge, a deep freezer in the garage, and another upright freezer out there, and they’re all pretty full.

I’ve always been a big batch cooker. If I’m making something freezable, I double it. If we go to Costco, we stock up…even if we already have 8 packs of chicken frozen at home.

For years, having that much tucked away felt practical.

Now it feels like I’ve discovered another entire room I have to empty except I can’t box this one up or take it to Goodwill.

We have to eat it, one meal at a time.

The next six months may involve a few more dinners that start with, “Guess what we’re having again tonight?”

The good news, I figured this out with time to do something about it.

I might just have enough food in this house to last until retirement without buying groceries.

I’m kidding.

I think.

Either way, the freezer is officially part of the plan.

And every meal is starting to look a little different now.

It’s not just dinner, it’s one less thing we have to move.
