Downsizing Has Become a Competition

Downsizing has somehow turned into a little competition at our house.

That was definitely not the plan.

We’ve just been slowly selling the things we know aren’t going with us.

I’ve been selling things from the house, and since Ed returned from Florida, he has started selling things from the barn.

The difference is, Ed can sell ONE thing and make more money than I do selling ten. 😂

So now, of course, we’ve started keeping track.

Not officially.

There’s no spreadsheet or scoreboard hanging on the refrigerator.

We just like to remind each other when one of us has had a particularly good day.

And I have discovered that if I can’t compete with him in dollars, I can absolutely compete in quantity.

At first, the idea of him starting to dismantle the workshop and sell off the tools and equipment tugged at my heart.

We spent years building that space and filling it with tools and projects and plans.

There are a lot of memories out there.

But somewhere along the way, this little game we’ve made out of it changed how it feels.

Now when something sells, we laugh about who is ahead.

We tease each other a little.

Another thing leaves the house.

Another shelf gets cleared.

Another little piece of the plan falls into place.

And instead of feeling sad about everything that is leaving, I’m starting to notice how good it feels to have less.

Every empty space feels like progress.

So I’m pretty sure Ed is going to win the money category.

But number of items sold?

Game on! 😂
